Kim Jong Un invites South Korean President Moon to Pyongyang

Shortly after leaving Pyeongchang, Pence told reporters on Air Force Two that he had set out on the trip "to express American resolve regarding North Korea".

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon said Sunday that South and North Korea should work actively together to create the right conditions for a meeting between President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

According to journalists in Pyeongchang for the ceremony, it's unclear what the two impersonators were doing, but they apparently made a scene.

Reviving inter-Korean talks is key to the polices of Moon, who says South Korea should be in the driver's seat in global efforts to deal with the North's nuclear threat.

Some South Korean media had criticized Pence's decision to attend the opening reception for only five minutes, instead of sitting at the same table as the North Koreans, and not to stand when the joint Korean team entered the stadium on opening night.

Any meeting would represent a diplomatic coup for Moon, who swept to power past year on a policy of engaging more with the reclusive North and has pushed for a diplomatic solution to the standoff over North Korea's nuclear and missile program.

"The Japan-South Korea agreement is one that finally and irreversibly resolves (the issue)".

Moon responded that he would try to make it happen, the spokesman said. She is the first immediate member of the Kim family, which has ruled the North for seven decades, to visit South Korea. "It was done in hockey, so why not with us?" he said.

"I think in the United States of America, just as in France - where the president was impressed on Bastille Day - we can celebrate our troops, not in any way ever be associated with the provocations of the North".

North Korea has spent years developing its military, saying it needs to protect itself from USA aggression.

Other members of the North Korean delegation present at Saturday's meeting included Ri Son Gwon - who led the first sit-down talks at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) earlier this year, and Choe Hwi.

The atmosphere could deteriorate on the Korean Peninsula after South Korea and the U.S. resume joint military exercise, which the allies have suspend until after the Olympics.

With a smile, a handshake and a warm message in South Korea's presidential guest book, Kim Yo Jong has struck a chord with the public just one day into the PyeongChang Games.

The result mattered less than the political symbolism, however, as around 200 of North Korea's famed "army of beauties" charmed a crowd of 3,600 besotted locals with nostalgic oldies - and even broke out a Mexican wave. Communications director Jarrod Agen tweeted a laudatory review of Pence's evening: "VP stands and cheers for US athletes".

It wasn't until this week that the world learned Kim Yo Jong would join her nation's Olympic delegation. In January 1968, Ms. Kim Yo Jong's grandfather, founding North Korean president Kim Il Sung, sent a squad of North Korean commandos to Seoul who tried unsuccessfully to kill then-president Park Chung-hee. Reuters reports that he skipped the symbolic desert called "A Plate of Hope", a "dark chocolate tempered in the shape of barbed wire lay over a map of the Korean peninsula rendered in thin blue chocolate, a representation of the heavily militarized border that separates Games host South Korea and its old enemy in the North".
