Colten Boushie died Aug. 9 2016. Gerald Stanley is charged with second-degree murder in his death

Stanley, the Saskatchewan farmer charged with second-degree murder in the death of Cree man Colten Boushie on August 9, 2016, was acquitted by a jury in Battleford Court of Queen's Bench on Friday evening. Like many, I knew the outcome of this trial before the jury even deliberated.

"This is not going to go away any time soon", said Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Chief Bobby Cameron. We hoped for justice from Colten.

While accounts vary, a friend of Boushie's in the vehicle that day said Stanley retrieved a gun from inside his shop and then shot Boushie in the head, CBC reported.

Boushie's cousin Jade Tootoosis, his brother Jace Boushie, and his uncle Alvin Baptiste repeated their earlier denunciations of the verdict made outside the Battleford court house. Isadore Day, Ontario regional chief of the Assembly of First Nations, told CBC that the organization would assist with the appeal by raising funds and calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould to intervene.

Crown prosecutor Bill Burge disputed that, arguing that Stanley handled the firearm carelessly and that the only inference was that he pulled the trigger and fired the fatal shot.

"My thoughts are with the family of Colten Boushie tonight", Jodi Wilson-Raybould said Friday on Twitter.

She said the system has failed them as Indigenous people.

Boushie and friends had been on Stanley's farm and had gotten into an altercation with Stanley and his family.

Clint Wuttunee, chief of the Red Pheasant First Nation of which Boushie was a member, called the ruling perverse and said it has crushed the spirit of the community.

Defence lawyer Scott Spencer has argued Boushie died as a result of a "freak accident" when the gun hang fired and that Stanley never meant to hurt anyone. "One-on-one and see what can be done", said Alvin Baptiste.

"There's never any victor in a case like this", he told reporters outside the courthouse.

Other Indigenous leaders attended the news conference Friday night, warning of the expanding racial divide in Saskatchewan. "The family prayed for peace", she said.

Premier Scott Moe asked people to be measured in their response.

Thousands of Canadians spent their Saturday at rallies as part of a day of action to support the family of Colten Boushie.

"The jury's job is to render a just verdict, so they are taking their job seriously and, frankly, whatever verdict the jury comes up with in this case, I believe that based on the evidence that they've heard it will be a reasonable verdict", Chris Murphy said. "Let us all remember our personal responsibility for our thoughts, our actions, and our comments - including those on social media".
