Ted Potter Jr. outplayed the world's No. 1 player and held off everyone else to win the AT&T Pebble Beach National for his first victory since a broken ankle almost ended his career.

Potter was chasing history at the par-71 Monterey Peninsula layout, where he teed off on 10 and played his first seven holes in seven under par with five birdies and an eagle.Potter added four more birdies after the turn to seize the solo lead and take his total for the round to 11-under. "To come back from that it is unbelievable right now". Jason Day, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Chez Reavie formed a four-way tie for second place at 14 under.

Potter, who has spent time on the PGA and Web.com Tours in recent seasons, earned his second PGA Tour win - his first since the 2012 Greenbrier Classic. It was a long time coming for the feisty lefty who battled his way back to the PGA Tour after suffering an injury in 2014 that caused him to miss almost two years of competition. He said he was "completely out of my element" this week, and that golf is "the hardest game out there".

The win gets Potter a spot in the Masters this April, where he's made just one career appearance in 2013.

"It's great but I'm just hoping moving forward we don't have to talk about color anymore", Fitzgerald said.

But things got tougher coming in, with bogeys at 10, 12 and 17 before he regained a share of the lead with his closing birdie.Putting troubles derailed Rory McIlroy's first Pebble Beach National Pro-Am bid as the Northern Ireland star failed to make the cut.

"I felt like I played OK", Johnson said. Reavie has now finished second in two straight starts. The Australian has not finished outside the top 25 since the 2017 Open Championship.
