PyeongChang Winter Olympics open amid grand ceremony

News reports said 4,000 of the phones were being given to athletes attending the Pyeongchang games, but that athletes from Iran and North Korea would be excluded because of United Nations sanctions against the two countries over their nuclear programs. For the first time, they will compete together under a unified flag.

In order to boost unity between the two halves of the Korean Peninsula, which has been torn apart through war for decades, both North and South Korea marched under a single Korean flag in the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and his wife arrived after the handshakes.

"Explicitly speaking, we have no intention to meet with the USA side during the stay in South Korea".

In a televised speech, Kim said that the parade marks North Korea's emergence as a "global military power" despite facing the "worst sanctions". South Korea is now ranked 22nd, and the North 25th.

Also, the photos of certain divided families from North and South Korea who were given an opportunity in the past years to meet each other will never be omitted from the memory of history. North Korean players even threw a birthday party for a South Korean player last week.

Reclusive North Korea and the rich, democratic South are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

"North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the "Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times".

Still, NBC has already made much of that back, selling more than $900 million in ad sales for the recent Winter games, a record according to the network.

Pence avoided public criticism of Moon, congratulating South Korea on hosting the Olympics but privately, officials said, he expressed concern about Moon's more conciliatory tone toward North Korea.

At the opening ceremony, Pence, Kim Yo-jong and Kim Yong-nam were seated in close proximity to each other.

The IOC in December banned Russian Federation from the Games over doping in the country that included massive manipulation of doping samples at the Sochi Olympics and more than 1,000 athletes across several sports.
