Rick Adelman's son RJ dead at 44 after being struck by car

The son of a veteran National Basketball Association head coach died in a tragic vehicle accident late last week.

Former NBA coach Rick Adelman's son was killed in an auto-pedestrian accident in downtown Houston.

R.J. worked for the Seattle Supersonics, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves in roles that ranged from assistant video coordinator to scout to assistant coach to director of player personnel.

R. J. Adelman, age 44, grew up in OR and lettered four years playing basketball at Willamette University, including as a member of the school's 1993 NAIA Division II National Championship team.

Police said R.J. Adelman, 44, was hit by a driver as he crossed the street the afternoon of February 2.

Officers said R.J. Adelman was not in a crosswalk at the time.

Adelman died as a result of blunt force injuries sustained during the crash. He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver who struck the victim was questioned by officers and then released. However, we're told the accident is still under investigation.

R.J. now stands seventh all-time on the Bearcats' single-season free throw percentage list, shooting 84.1 percent during his senior season in 1994-95.
