Rockets to sign Joe Johnson, whom Kings bought out

Boston Celtics buyout candidate Joe Johnson reportedly to sign with Houston Rockets

NBA.com's David Aldridge added the Houston Rockets are "very interested" in Johnson "and have been working on the assumption that he'd be available one way or the other" after the trade deadline.

Johnson, a seven-time All-Star in his 17th National Basketball Association season, will sign with the Houston Rockets after clearing waivers, according to multiple reports.

Should Johnson wind up in Boston (20th in offensive rating), it will represent a reunion after the Celtics selected him 10th overall in the 2001 draft and subsequently traded him to the Phoenix Suns 48 games into his rookie season. He sure wasn't sticking around Sacramento after the Kings acquired him in a three-team trade with the Cavaliers.

Johnson went on to find a lot of success in Atlanta and Brooklyn before bouncing around the last few years. It's tough to say without getting him into this environment, and it's a reasonable, low-priced gamble for Houston.

Johnson, 36, started just three games for the rebuilding Kings this season, averaging 7.3 points per game. But Johnson can still make spot-up 3's, and he is a proven clutch performer in the playoffs.

The threat of the Houston Rockets as potential slayers to the reigning kings of the National Basketball Association, the Golden State Warriors, looms larger after reaching agreements with two serviceable veterans in the post-buyout market.
