Ron Howard Admits Initial Reluctance To Direct 'Solo

Solo: A Star Wars Story showcases a hot off the press version of the Millenium Falcon, one that Han Solo wins "fair and square" in a game of the Correlian Spike variation of Sabacc. The Lucasfilm president actually praised the two creatives, commending them for their comedic skills, but she reiterated that their fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants mindset caused trouble behind the scenes. It's mentioned briefly in The Empire Strikes Back, though I think the first time I really noticed it in detail was in reading Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn.

And it wasn't just because Ron Howard had taken over the project - following the firing of its original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller ("The Lego Movie") - who Lucas has known since the 1970s when he directed Howard in "American Graffiti".

"He told me just trust my instincts, you know?" When all of this came together, all of us wanted nothing more than to have this be an incredible working experience.

While the majority of fans - both Star Wars and just movie fans in general - viewed the prequels as some kind of personal attack, the reviews at the time were spectacularly kind, with Attack Of The Clones clocking up 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Revenge Of The Sith is sitting pretty with 79%.

"So, it's not like there's anything I can really add to it because the last thing I want to do is...[reopen a wound]". "We are really proud of the fantastic and world-class work of our cast and crew". The actual quote has to do with odds, but we'll let Howard slide on it this time.

The creator of the "Star Wars" saga came up with a suggestion for a shot and director Ron Howard had the actors act it out. "I think in terms of us leaving the project, I think everybody went in with really good intentions and our approach to making the movie was different than theirs". 'But when I learned that this change was happening, it just came in a moment where I was working on lots of new projects for Imagine, and I had not planned to direct anything previous year. So then this came my way, and I was talking to Kathy, and the now tragically late Alli Shearmur, an old friend. Keep an eye out for it when Solo: A Star Wars Story opens on May 25th!

He continued, "It's disappointing that any company ever feels like they have to make a change like that".
