Russian appeals delayed till after Olympics

On Wednesday afternoon, the CAS will also be hearing the appeal of 32 other Russian athletes who were not invited by the IOC.

These athletes failed a vetting process set up by the International Olympic Committee after banning Russia from competing in South Korea in response to the Russian doping program at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi.

The IOC has refused to invite the 32 cleared Russian athletes to this month's PyeongChang Winter Games, noting there was evidence about them that had not been available to the IOC commission that had investigated them. The 15 were among the 28 whose bans were lifted by CAS last week.

The Pyeongchang Winter Olympics open in two days, but the issue of which Russians are in - and which are out - is dominating the agenda of IOC President Thomas Bach.

South Korean authorities deployed 900 military personnel at the Pyeongchang Olympics on Tuesday after the security force was depleted by an outbreak of norovirus. The World Anti-Doping Agency randomly drug tested 16 members of the Russian women's hockey team at their first practice in South Korea Monday.

Any Russians who win late invitations would compete under "Olympic Athletes from Russia" because the Russian team is formally banned for doping at the Sochi Olympics.

"The timing there was not in our hands", he said.

CAS said decisions on the cases will be made in due course, without providing further detail.

The court on February 7 was still looking into appeals from 45 other Russian athletes and two coaches who hope to have rulings in time for the Winter Olympics. The IOC had said it wouldn't invite athletes previously banned for doping.

The IOC has barred Russian Federation from the Pyeongchang Olympics, which open on Friday, over a widespread doping conspiracy.

Fifteen more Russians have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking to be admitted to the Pyeongchang Olympics.

"We share the distress, uncertainty and frustration expressed by many athletes on the news of this ruling and believe this decision to be a massive setback for clean sport", the WADA athlete committee said. "We're talking about how we respond to attacks on those fundamental values by a country that voluntarily agreed to respect those values and which then deliberately attempted to destroy them".

The IOC ruled in December that Russians who served doping bans in the past weren't eligible for Pyeongchang under its vetting procedure. "We are determined for the best, we had a good training camp right before the Olympic Games and we are equipped with decent sports gear".
