Mazz Tom Brady Emerges As Undisputed Champion Of Patriots Palace Intrigue

Even though McDaniels hadn't yet signed a contract, the Colts announced he'd be formally introduced as the Colts' coach during a news conference today.

A new report from Mike Reiss of ESPN gave new information on what may have led to McDaniels' decision to stay with the Pats.

McDaniels has been New England's offensive coordinator since 2012, his second tenure with the franchise.

The situation is similar to the decision by Bill Belichick, the Patriots' current head coach, in 2000 when he was promoted to be head coach of the New York Jets after Bill Parcells stepped down.

McDaniels, by design, hadn't signed anything with the Colts yet. Most assumed that McDaniels would have already committed if the Patriots didn't happen to be in the middle of a Super Bowl run.

Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard spoke to the media on Wednesady morning, just hours after getting the news from Josh McDaniels that the Patriots' offensive coordinator was going to remain in New England and renege on his agreement to become Indy's head coach. "Your agent's telling you to go and you decide, 'Nah, I'm not going'".

Most in the National Football League - from players to former coach Tony Dungy to even McDaniels' own agent, Bob LaMonte - slammed the move. The Colts had meant to officially introduce McDaniels at a press conference today, but instead they'll be addressing the team's continued search for a head coach.

With injuries to Andrew Luck and a lack of roster talent, the Colts haven't posted a winning season in their last three years. The team even went so far as to announce an agreement on Tuesday morning, before McDaniels chose to stay with the Patriots as offensive coordinator before a scheduled press conference on Wednesday.

"I didn't want the explanation", Ballard said of the quick conversation. However, the latter expressed its disappointment following McDaniels' sudden change of mind.

"In 31 cities, I'd say the odds of them hiring him (as head coach) would be slim to none", Weis continued.

Together, these two things were too appealing for McDaniels to keep his commitment to the Colts, and to be fair, until Tuesday, he didn't know they were on the table.
