Samsung Is Scrambling To Find New Buyers For Its OLED Panels

According to Nikkei, Samsung ramped up production to meet the expected demand for the iPhone X. That demand didn't quite materialise, and now the firm needs to offload its excess OLED panels onto other customers. The only Apple smartphone that is featuring an OLED display is iPhone X, the rest of the models like iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have an LCD display panel which is again made by Samsung Display.

A report by Nikkei Asian Review notes that anticipating huge demand for the iPhone X, Samsung invested a lot of money in creating new manufacturing units for the OLED panels that are used in the Apple phone. And numerous Chinese handset producers who do use the higher priced display are said to be increasing their own production capacity.

Because Apple announced that the average revenue per iPhone unit sold during the fiscal first quarter was higher than expected, it appeared that the iPhone X was selling better than believed. A single OLED display along with touch sensors for iPhone X costs $100, maybe that's the reason that the total cost of the phone went as high as $1,000. It is worth recalling that the iPhone X uses an OLED screen made by Samsung.

That's left Samsung, which makes the high-end OLED screens for the iPhone X, with too much product on its hands.

It was reported earlier this month that Apple has cut iPhone X display orders from Samsung Display, the conglomerate's display-making affiliate. The display in the iPhone has not been praised just for its brightness levels but also for colour accuracy that is as good as those of the LCD screen despite using OLED panel that tend to be colder.

For Samsung, the dominant OLED market player, it is also hard to expand sales of its smartphones equipped with expensive panels.

Samsung has reportedly been left saddled with supplies and it doesn't help that there are still many smartphone manufacturers that have yet to make the switch to OLED.
