Desperate search continues 40 miles off coast as families of fishermen hold on to hope

The search remained active Friday morning, with a helicopter and a Coast Guard cutter looking for the boat.

Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville Command Center watchstanders were able to ping the cell phone of the 34-foot fishing vessel Jessi K's captain and make contact.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter flew the man to Air Station Atlantic City, where EMS workers transferred him to a local hospital.

The US Coast Guard and local first responders are searching Buzzards Bay Thursday for what might be a mariner in trouble, a search that began Wednesday night when someone made three calls for help on the global distress radio channel.

If the call was a hoax, the search cost thousands of dollars in fuel and put Coast Guard lives at risk in the dead of night. On board were 30-year-old Paul Matos, of Bayville, and his crew member Dennis Smalling. A fishing boat helping in the search found possible debris.

"At approximately 1:25 am my brother's fishing vessel, Queen Anne's Revenge, made a mayday call that they were taking in water", Oliveira said in a message posted on Facebook.

"The boat was positioning about 42 miles off the coast of Manasquan".

Crews are searching for three missing fishermen near Jacksonville, the Coast Guard said Wednesday evening.
