Investigators were combing through the wreckage Tuesday in a remote, rugged portion of the natural wonder, west of the national park, and will determine if the Airbus EC130 B4 helicopter owned by Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters had been updated with a crash-resistant fuel system.

Stein declined to speculate on what may have caused the crash, though he said a preliminary report will be ready in the coming days.

The pilot, 42-year-old Scott Booth, and passengers Ellie Milward, 29, her husband Jonathan Udall, 32, and their friend and Jason Hill's girlfriend, Jennifer Barham, 39, survived the crash but were critically injured, according to authorities.

An Arizona medical examiner had not yet completed autopsies on the victims Tuesday. She was among four survivors. That includes fuel tanks made of composite material that can expand rather than rupture and components that seal automatically if they break away from the fuel tank to keep gas from spreading.

The NTSB held a news conference Monday to discuss the deadly helicopter crash that happened at the Grand Canyon over the weekend.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.

More than 221 people died in those accidents, though not all from fire-related injuries, the agency said.

Stein says specific components of the helicopter will be examined, along with archived radar data and pilot certification.

The FAA designated a working group to take up the NTSB recommendation. They had saved for a year to go, and it was a helicopter accident. He said some other pilots flying helicopters in the area at the time of the crash descended into the gulch and delivered water and first aid supplies.

Jason Hill's girlfriend and two other friends were today in a critical condition in hospital with severe burns.

"One of them was calling out a name". Three friends and the pilot are in hospital where investigators want to interview them about what went wrong. "This crash is another example". Airbus didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment Tuesday.

University of Southampton law graduate Hill, 32, was on board the helicopter in Las Vegas, Nevada, with his younger brother, Stuart Hill, and his brother's girlfriend, Becky Dobson.

The Grand Canyon helicopter flight that ended with the death of three Britons was meant to be the highlight of a trip celebrating the 30th birthday of one of the victims. They were just inseparable.

There is a temporary restriction on tour flights into the Grand Canyon but those flights could start again in a few days.

Ms Dobson's father Peter Dobson told the Press Association that Becky was "full of life and looking forward to going to Vegas for her boyfriend's 30th birthday to celebrate"."She was always happy", he said. The company also claims to be "the world's oldest and largest sightseeing company, flying an estimated 600,000 passengers each year on daily tours to the Grand Canyon and beyond".
