Winter storm leaves deadly mark on the Midwest

More snow is expected before then with additional accumulation making for a wintery weekend.

While it isn't too bad the most major delays seem to be flights to Ohio, Illinois especially flights to Chicago and to cities in MI like Kalamazoo, Lansing and Alpena.

As Environment Canada predicts the snowfall will be heavier at times, it is recommended t check the up to date weather forecast and road reports before travelling.

Late Thursday, snow will begin falling in big cities, including Chicago, and continue for most of the night. Uncertainty remains high with this rapidly changing and highly variable winter storm.

The Chicago area remains under a Winter Storm Warning through Friday morning, with the warning extending through 9 a.m.in north-central and far northern IL, and through noon across the remainder of the Chicago area, including the City of Chicago.

By the morning commute Friday, expect snowy conditions just about everywhere. Forecasters say travel will be "very hard to impossible" during the Friday morning and afternoon commutes.

Snow from a winter storm moving across the Great Lakes is leaving roads treacherous, closing schools and cancelling hundreds of flights across the upper Midwest.

Meteorologist Heather Orow in Grand Rapids, Michigan, says the storm is "generally going to be an issue for travel". Driving conditions will be hazardous, if not impossible, in areas stretching past Cleveland.

American, United and Southwest airlines warned travelers to expect more flight cancellations to and from Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. About 50 miles could be the difference between a foot of snow and very little to nothing, the weather service said.

Up to 12 inches of snow had been predicted for much of the state, but NWS forecasters revised their predictions downward slightly Wednesday afternoon. Schools across Nebraska and Iowa also closed or delayed the start of classes.
