Study links acne with increased risk of depression

Acne might be correlated to depression

People with acne have a significantly increased risk of developing major depression, but only in the first five years after diagnosis, according to a large analysis of nearly two million people.

After adjusting for these factors, the scientists found that the increased risk for depression persisted only for the first five years after diagnosis.

Isabelle Vallerand, from the University of Calgary, and colleagues looked at data that included those from The Health Improvement Network, a large database of medical records collected at Primary Care clinics throughout the United Kingdom.

The study revealed a link between having acne and a 63% higher chance of being diagnosed with severe depression in the first year following acne's onset. The findings indicated that the risk of depression was highest after a year of developing acne. However, they advised doctors to carefully monitor their patients for depression and seek proper treatment if necessary.

Acne is associated with increased probability of developing major depressive disorder (MDD), with risk highest within 1 year of diagnosis, according to a research letter published online February 7 in the British Journal of Dermatology.

"It appears that acne is a lot more than just skin deep", she said. The mental health concerns should be taken seriously, researcher warned. Therefore, a new studyshowing that people who suffer from acne are more likely to develop depression didn't come as a huge surprise. Teens, in particular, are vulnerable to the emotional impacts of acne. "Studies have also found that clearing acne can relieve depression and anxiety". Psoriasis, another skin problem, has always been associated with mental health issues.
