It took a day or two, but astronomers have figured out where the Tesla Roadster launched into deep space aboard SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket is going.

Musk reportedly said on an earnings call on Wednesday that the company was still on track to meet their production goal of 5,000 Model 3's a week by the end of June.

Observations of the Roadster, which has a spacesuit-clad mannequin named Starman riding in the driver's seat, indicate that it's in an elliptical orbit around the sun that will take it just outside the orbit of Mars and then back to slightly within Earth's orbital distance.

The auto faces considerable speed bumps before settling into its intended orbit around the sun, an oval circle stretching from the orbit of Earth on one end to the orbit of Mars on the other.

"Based on China's current technology, it would be entirely possible to develop the model [Long March 9] within a decade after it's approved", Long said, adding that they expect it to be one of the world's most powerful carrier rockets. It's equipped with three boosters and 27 engines created to provide about 5 million pounds of thrust.

That said, we're all dying to see Starman make his flybys, and we can hardly wait to see the bright red Roadster cruising along with Mars in its rear-view mirror.

Musk, in a tweet, said that the rocket changed directions soon after One of the bursts of fuel that get burnt off to give it momentum had actually pushed it too hard.

He now begins his billion year mission around Mars in which one day, he may even park his vehicle there. It's the same outfit real astronauts will wear when riding SpaceX rockets from Florida a year or so from now, bound for the International Space Station. Musk is the founder and CEO of SpaceX, which developed the Falcon Heavy, and of Tesla cars.

"Third burn successful", Musk reported on Twitter.

SpaceX's launch comes as the Trump administration is looking to restructure the role of NASA, ensuring that private enterprise and global partners work closely with the space agency.

Unlike most rockets out there, the Falcon Heavy receives no government funding.

He's already making plans for an even bigger, mightier rocket that will carry astronauts, not just cargo like the Heavy, along with the infrastructure that would be needed to set up camp on the moon and asteroids, and eventually build the city he envisions on Mars.
