'Unprovoked Attack' Results in US Military Killing 100 Syrian Soldiers

Russia accuses Kurdish forces of giving ISIL amnesty

Some 2,000 US special forces troops remain on the ground in Syria, allied to the Kurdish-led SDF alliance, which holds the largest swathe of territory still outside the control of the government.

The regime was likely seeking to reclaim ground once held by ISIL but now controlled by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces.

IS had held most of Deir al-Zour since 2014. While Syria denies such claims, they are being investigated by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). "Coalition service members in an advise, assist, and accompany capacity were co-located with SDF partners during the attack eight kilometers east of the agreed-upon Euphrates River de-confliction line".

But it lost its last remaining strongholds in Syria in November.

"We continue to support SDF with respect to defeating ISIL..."

"The coalition conducted strikes against attacking forces to repel the act of aggression" against its own personnel and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) hosting them, it said.

The coalition "cannot speculate on the exact makeup of the Syrian pro-regime forces who conducted the attack at this time", Veale said.

The attack was carried out by 500 troops backed by artillery, tanks, multiple-launch rocket systems and mortars but the coalition and its local allies killed more than 100 of them, the official said.

The case exposes a greater problem, however, as according to the MoD the attack by the coalition "once again proved that the true goal of the continuous illegal presence of United States forces in Syria is already not the fight against ISIS worldwide terrorist group, but the capture and control of the economic assets belonging exclusively to the Syrian Arab Republic". Roughly "20 to 30 artillery and tank rounds landed within 500 meters" of the headquarters before the US -led coalition carried out strikes in self-defense.

Before the war, the Omar oil field was producing 30,000 barrels of oil per day, while the Conoco gas field was producing 13m cubic metres of gas per day.

"Pro-regime forces initiated hostilities with artillery pieces (howitzers)".

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said on Thursday that the U.S.is supporting a United Nations call for a month-long "cessation of violence", with the goal of allowing humanitarian aid and medical care to flow to more than 700 civilians in the besieged suburbs, according to the Associated Press.

The latest bloodshed moved the death toll close to 200 for the week and left medics completely overwhelmed.

Among them were at least 58 children, the Observatory said.

"There was a huge, huge escalation against the city".

The bombardments are suspected to have involved use of chlorine gas.

"This has to stop", he said. The chaos unleashed in the original rebellion to topple Mr Assad gave room for jihadist groups such as Islamic State, as well as the Kurdish forces that are now USA partners trying to establish their own enclaves.
