"The most intrusive ad experiences include prestitial ads (those full-page ads that block you from seeing the content on the page) and flashing animated ads", blogged Chris Bentzel, Chrome's engineering manager, citing a survey of 40,000 U.S. and European web users. Google claims that since it kicked off this initiative, "42% of sites which were failing the Better Ads Standards have resolved their issues and are now passing".

In the official blog, Google Chrome Vice President, Rahul Roy-Chowdhury explains that in order to identify and block disruptive ads, the browser will rely on an industry group Coalition for Better Ads, which is dedicated to improving the ad experience on the web.

"When at least one network request has been blocked, Chrome will show the user a message indicating that ad blocking has occurred as well as an option to disable this setting...."

Google said those sites that have ads of the type mentioned above would first be served a warning and a month's time to mend their ways. According to Net Market Share, in January, Chrome had a 59% market share of all laptops, desktop computers and mobile devices.

Here is the list of ads that will trigger Google Ad blocker.

Under the circumstances, Google's latest efforts can well be seen as an attempt to hit the middle grounds of sorts. "So will Chrome block ads their ad team missed?" Large sticky ads? You know, the ones that stay on your screen even as you try to scroll past them.

The new ad blocker will warn ads, such as auto video playing and flashing animated ones, when they are in violation of rules. "To us, your experience on the web is a higher priority than the money that these annoying ads may generate".

At a technical level, when a Chrome user navigates to a page, Chrome's ad filter checks if that page belongs to a site that fails the Better Ads Standards.

"We've already seen more and more people express their discontent with annoying ads by installing ad-blockers, but blocking all ads can hurt sites or advertisers who aren't doing anything disruptive". Many news sites such as The Wrap or the Chicago Tribune have experienced a decline in online visits as web users avoid having to deal with their pop ads.
