Virginia Tech stuns No. 2 Virginia for road upset

Virginia could be No. 1 if it beats Virginia Tech

Kerry Blackshear Jr. scored on a putback with 5.8 seconds left and Virginia Tech spoiled No. 2 Virginia's opportunity to climb to No. 1 with a 61-60 overtime victory Saturday night.

Blackshear Jr. couldn't convert the ensuing free throw but Virginia's Ty Jerome missed a 3-pointer with one second left as Virginia Tech prevailed.

Robinson had a game-high 20 points to lead the Hokies, who shot 57.1 percent in the first half, when they led by as many as 12 points, and 28.6 percent in the second half.

It's COLLEGE GAMEDAY in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a key ACC matchup awaits between the second-ranked Virginia basketball team and in-state rival the Virginia Tech Hokies.

After failing to score a point in Virginia's win over Syracuse, Cavaliers senior guard Devon Hall bounced back nicely against Florida State with 17 points, three rebounds and three assists.

That was that. Virginia didn't really lose any ground at the top of college basketball thanks to the aforementioned losses by Villanova and Purdue, though the Cavaliers did probably lose their shot at being #1 this week. The Hokies improved to 18-7 on the season with the win, and they are now 7-5 in ACC play. It has been incredibly unusual for them to trail at home - witness their 16-game home winning streak dating to last season - and Virginia Tech made it hard after halftime with stout defense of its own. While offense is their main focus, the Hokies have not allowed a team to shoot better than 44 percent in any of their last four wins.

The Hokies tallied 12 points in the five-minute extra session, which was remarkable considering they sputtered their way to 16 total in the second half. Following a free throw from Hall, the Hokies' Nickeil Alexander-Walker made a three-pointer to trim the margin to 60-59. The teams have split the season series for three consecutive seasons.

UVa trailed by as many as nine points in the 1st half, and the 'Hoos were down 33-26 at halftime. They beat the Hokies 78-52 in Cassell Coliseum earlier this season, College Gameday was in town, and the Hoos were all set to be ranked No. 1 in the country this coming week with a victory over their in-state rivals. They are won of the most risky offensive teams in the country, and the Cavaliers-despite being 12-point favorites-shouldn't overlook their rivals. Blackshear, who finished with just seven points and who missed six wide open three-pointers, was also fouled on the play.

The Cavaliers attempted a season-high 38 three-pointers, connecting on just 11 of them. Star guard Kyle Guy was just 5-of-21 from the field and 3-of-14 from the outside, while Ty Jerome was 4-of-14 overall and 1-of-10 from three-point range.

The Hokies go on the road to play their first of two games against No. 9 Duke on Wednesday night.
