The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Friday rejected the appeals of 47 Russian athletes and coaches against the International Olympic Committee decision not to invite them.

A picture of a jubilant short-track speed skater Viktor Ahn, a six-time Olympic gold medalist, crossing the finish line first at the Sochi Games found place.

The group contesting the decision included 28 athletes who had life bans from the Olympics lifted by the International Olympic Committee last week, when CAS ruled there was insufficient evidence they had benefited from a system of state-sponsored doping.

A last-chance bid by 45 Russian athletes who claimed they were wrongfully banned from the Winter Olympics has been turned down.

Speaker of the Russian State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin has called for a firm response from his colleagues to the recent Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling, which denied Olympic entry to 47 Russian athletes.

As a result Russia's track and field team was banned from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016 and Russian Federation was banned from the PyeongChang Winter Olympics starting on Friday, with the athletes competing as neutrals under the Olympic flag.

"The applications filed by Russian athletes and coaches have been dismissed", CAS said in a statement, issued just hours before the games' opening ceremony. It also banned them for life from the Olympics.

Ahead of the Games, the International Olympic Committee conducted tests on around 17,000 athletes, centering on sports and individuals suspected of doping breaches.

The decision leaves intact the total of 168 Russian athletes who were allowed to come to Pyeongchang to compete, after they passed additional scrutiny.

Though there are several restrictions for OAR athletes. "We want our athletes to be competing against the very best but in the knowledge they are facing clean athletes".

WADA welcomes the remark made by the CAS Panel that it was "faced with evaluating an unprecedented response to an extraordinary situation, that is, a state-sponsored doping scheme".

"The disappointment for us is that it is not transparent", Graeme Steel, chief executive of iNADO, an umbrella group that includes the world's leading anti-doping agencies, told Reuters.

Even the athletes who are eligible are not allowed to contend for medals under the Russian flag.

However, doping at the Winter Olympics reached its nadir with the Russian plot four years ago in Sochi.

The other 32, including An, biathlon gold medallist Anton Shipulin and Sergei Ustyugov, a cross-country skiing world champion, were also omitted from the list of Russians invited to Pyeongchang. While President of the IOC, Thomas Bach, has openly declared that it is a "privilege' to be invited to the Olympics, and one that does not automatically become available because a sanction has been lifted".
