Kim Yo-jong reportedly delivered an invitation from her brother for Moon to visit Pyongyang for closer talks and cooperation. It was a sharp, but possibly fleeting, contrast with many months of rising tensions connected to the North's continued development of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles.

Kim's sister is said to be acting as his special envoy in the south during the Games.

Are these Winter Games having the effect South Korea had hoped, in thawing relations with the north?

Earlier South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon had hosted a lunch for the Pyongyang delegation at a five-star hotel.

As the first medals were being won at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, we got our first glimpse of the North Korean "cheerleaders".

Any summit between the two still-officially warring Koreas would be a coup for Moon, who has been pushing for a diplomatic solution to the standoff over North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.

"I never thought I would visit (the South) so suddenly and believed much would be unusual and different but I saw many things that were similar or the same", said Kim Yo Jong in a toast during Sunday's dinner, adding she hoped to meet the "friendly faces" before her later in Pyongyang.

"The invitation is a very clever move by Kim Jong Un to drive a big wedge [between Washington and Seoul]".

Kim's presence at the Olympics has presented people in South Korea and beyond with something new to know about North Korea. The riverside facility is named after late U.S. Army commander Walton Walker, who's considered a war hero in the South for his battles against the North during the Korean War. The South hosts 28,500 USA troops, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean war.

They created a unique atmosphere in the Gangneung Ice Arena during the speed skating heats.

One telling incident came early.

Sunday's KCNA report cited Moon as saying inter-Korean relations should be mended by the parties concerned "at any cost as indicated by Chairman Kim Jong Un in his New Year Address".

In December, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson offered to start talks with North Korea without pre-conditions, but the State Department later said there would first have to be a "period of calm" in which Pyongyang suspends testing before any negotiations could begin. He also called for the need of a quick resumption of dialogue between North Korea and the United States. Her visit comes one year after the U.S. Treasury Department placed sanctions on Kim for her role in propaganda and "agitation" as part of her family's harsh rule over North Korea, and her government's efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

By also sending a youthful, photogenic individual who would surely draw global attention at the Olympics, Kim might have also been trying to construct a fresher image of the country, particularly in face of USA efforts to use the Olympics as an occasion to highlight the North's brutal human rights record.

Trump has at times questioned the objective of further talks with the North after years of negotiations by previous US administrations failed to halt the North's weapons programmes.
