White House quashes prospect of a John Kelly resignation

Trump's comments set off a firestorm at a time of national conversation about the mistreatment of women.

Sorensen is the second White House aide to resign this week amid domestic abuse allegations.

An ex-wife of former White House staff secretary Rob Porter says that the White House reaction to the abuse allegations against him are "troubling".

Sorensen alleged that Corbett punched him multiple times and once grabbed the steering wheel while he was driving on a highway. Senator John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, said of the allegations, "If you want to serve the public, particularly as a member of a president's staff, I don't care who you are, even if you're a Rhodes Scholar, you can't beat the hell out of your spouse".

He gave no nod to the treatment of the women whose reports of abuse led to Porter's resignation.

She brought up similar comments Trump made about the accusations against Roy Moore, Roger Ailes, Bill O'Reilly, and, well, himself. He did a very good job in the White House.

Kelly says, "Forty minutes later he was gone".

The White House initially defended Porter, with Kelly calling him a "man of true integrity".

Porter was one of the highest-ranking staffers in the president's administration.

'If they didn't know, it's a failure of vetting, ' he said of Porter's personal history. "And literally that was it".

"The president and chief of staff have full confidence in his abilities and his performance", said spokeswoman Sarah Sanders.

Porter has denied the allegations and blamed a "smear campaign" against him. Rep. Mark Meadows, the House Freedom Caucus chairman who has risen in prominence of late, is also a name in the mix.

While the FBI runs the background check for White House staff, the Office of Presidential Personnel still must sign off on the investigation to move the process forward. He also said Porter had been "terminated", before later clarifying that he had resigned.

Holderness says Porter kicked her, choked her, and threw her down when angry with her. Willoughby told the Daily Mail that when she was taking a shower after an argument, Porter dragged her out of the shower by the shoulders to continue yelling at her.

Some senior White House officials were generally aware of the allegations before Trump found out a report surfaced on DailyMail.com, a source familiar with the matter said.

"Well, he denies it", Trump told reporters.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly has been a target during the turmoil because of his initial support for Porter, which quieted as the week went on and was reduced to a claim in a Thursday memo to staff that physical violence is never acceptable.

Pence added that when he returns to Washington, DC, he will look into the matter and share his "counsel with the President directly".

"That's like saying that axe murderer out there, he's a great painter", said former Vice President Joe Biden. "Translate this into every day terms - is there any other crime - and it's a crime - where there'd be an explanation the reason why we shouldn't pay attention to the transgression is because they're good at something?"

"Of course, I was part of the background check and I was completely honest with what my experience of the marriage, including telling the police instances of abuse or police contact", said Willoughby.
