PyeongChang 2018 is the first Winter Olympic Games to be hosted by South Korea, which also hosted the Summer Olympics in 1988.

Seating plans shown on South Korean television just minutes earlier had Pence sitting to Moon's left, directly opposite Kim.

The 2018 Winter Olympics heads to Pyeongchang, South Korea this month to host the top athletes from countries all over the globe.

Pence is in Pyeongchang at the same time as a high-level North Korean delegation including leader Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong, and nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam.

Kim Yo Jong shook hands with Moon at the beginning of the ceremony.

Hyon Song Wol is part of an all-girl band in North Korea that is called Moranbong.

One of the athletes' whose Olympic dream was ended Friday was Viktor Ahn, a highly decorated speed skater who was born in South Korea and competed for the country before becoming a naturalized Russian citizen.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has warned South Korean President Moon Jae-in not to fall for North Korea's "smile diplomacy" during the Olympics, saying the North remains committed to developing nuclear weapons and missiles even while pursuing talks with the South.

At the same time, some South Koreans felt optimistic toward South Korea's decision to march under a unified flag with North Korea, as it aligns with the Olympic spirit of peace, cooperation and unity.

Pence is being joined by the father of Otto Warmbier, a USA student who suffered brain damage in a North Korean jail and died when he returned home previous year.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's sister has landed in the South, becoming the first member of Pyongyang's ruling dynasty to set foot in the rival country since the Korean war.

At a VIP reception before the opening ceremony, Pence and Kim Yong Nam were in the same room, according to Jarrod Agen, his deputy chief of staff, but Pence "did not come across the North Korean delegation" at the event.

Now, she must sit out some players who have been with her on that journey and will select three or four North Koreans in each of the three preliminary round games.

The United States government is represented by the hawkish Vice-President Mike Pence, who will be accompanied by Fred Warmbier, father of Otto Warmbier who died aged 22 after being detained in North Korea for a petty offence a year ago.

Thousands of spectators, including a squad of more than 200 North Korean cheerleaders, packed the frigid stadium for the opening ceremony.

Hundreds of anti-North Korea protesters scuffled with riot police hours not far from the main stadium before the opening ceremony began, with some of their banners reading "Moon regime is leading Korea to destruction".

Pence also has promised the US will soon unveil "the toughest and most aggressive round of economic sanctions on North Korea ever". US officials have grown increasingly dire in their warnings about the North's march toward developing an operational nuclear-tipped ballistic missile capable of reaching the continental U.S.

South Korea has yet to announce a confirmed schedule for the North Korean delegates aside of their participation in the opening ceremony and Saturday's luncheon with Mr Moon.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is also in Pyeongchang for the opening ceremony.

Sources said an invitation for Moon to visit North Korea may be a continuation of Pyongyang's efforts to drive a wedge between Seoul and Washington.

The presence of Kim, who was promoted to the country's Politburo, the senior body of North Korea's communist party, as an alternate member a year ago, represents a hugely significant move in the thawing of relations between the neighbors.
