Woman gouges out her own eyeball, found outside South Carolina church

Ben Cothran, an Anderson County Deputy, talks to fellow deputy Ashley Waters, who responded to a young woman with an eye injury, flown to Greenville Hospital after she was found on railroad tracks outside the South Main Mercy Chapel along South Main Street in Anderson on Tuesday.

A SC woman was near a local church when witnesses say she used her hands to rip out her eyes.

"We are certainly traumatized by this tragic event", she said. WYFF reported that she was holding both, while the Associated Press reported she was holding only one. By the time Anderson County deputies and medics arrived at the scene, the unidentified teen had managed to gouge out both eyeballs and was holding them in her hands.

The 19-year-old, who has not been identified, could be heard screaming for help before attempting to fend off anyone who came to her assistance, including police officers and paramedics. "Something was terribly wrong", Hiott told the station.

The Anderson County Sheriff's Office and EMS were dispatched to a freakish call on Tuesday. "It took two or three of our guys and two EMTs I believe to kind of subdue her enough for them to start rendering aid". She is in stable condition now and will reportedly be tested in order to determine if drugs played a role in the horrific act.

The woman survived, and was recovering at a nearby hospital.

The sheriff's office told the AP that since no crime was committed, no charges will be filed.
