'Big Ben': Spanish papers celebrate Sevilla's win against Man Utd

"So, I don't think it is something new for the club and of course being Manchester United manager and losing a Champions League tie at home is a disappointment".

A needlessly conservative performance from Manchester United was punished with embarrassing Champions League elimination as Jose Mourinho's side fell to a sloppy 2-1 defeat against Sevilla at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

It would seem to be a premature sentiment given that the Champions League exit is Mourinho's first real failure as United boss and they were unlikely to win the competition even had they progressed past Sevilla, but the fact that it was nearly entirely of his own making and was then compounded by his childishness after the match has given the fans a variety of sticks with which to beat him.

Romelu Lukaku has admitted Manchester United were guilty of profligacy against Sevilla and did not deserve to progress to the UEFA Champions League's last eight, yet the Belgian remains determined and states the Reds must now focus on the Emirates FA Cup.

"I sat in this chair with Porto - Man United out. I don't think we had control of the game because the opponent had that, but I can not say that my players had something wrong in terms of their attitude and their intention to play".

Manchester United will face Brighton in the Emirates Cup quarter-final clash on Saturday in their next game in what is effectively the only competition realistically possible for Mourinho to win this season. We lost and tomorrow is another day. That's football, it's not the end of the world.

"I don't have regrets", Mourinho said. They let the game go until a very risky period for us, which they did, and they scored a goal. "We always get in the right positions and the last pass was not good enough, and that is what killed us today". There are players in that United squad to play good attacking football.

While the other seven teams in the hat will hope to get Sevilla, who on paper are the weakest team in the draw, the win over United showed they can beat sides of greater stature.

The argument from many United fans is that they accept City are superior at the moment and would be satisfied, for now, if their team played attacking football, "the United way" and pushed City as hard as they can while challenging in Europe. It's not just changing for changing sake, it's a natural process. "We had a big game, as you know, against Liverpool and we came with high confidence to play this game, but Sevilla were better than us, so they deserved it".

"Even though we didn't create chances in the first-half we put in a good performance".
