Samajwadi Party candidates were leading in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh after initial rounds of counting for the parliamentary by-elections, officials said. He also alleged district administration is working towards making the BJP candidate win.

Yogi Government had taken oath of the office on March 19,2017 and the government is likely to launch several new schemes and project on the anniversary.

Denying that his move was linked to the worrying trends for the ruling BJP, Rautela said, "The counting of votes is underway".

While the lead in the Phulpur constituency is substantial at over 10,000 votes, the exact extent of leads in Gorakhpur can not be estimated. According to latest updates, Upendra Dutt Sharma of BJP is leading from Gorakhpur.

Phulpur Bypoll: Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel leading by 1437 votes with 7600 votes, BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel 6163 votes after round 3.

Gorakhpur is an important seat for the BJP as it is the bastion of the chief minister, who represented the seat in the Lok Sabha five times.

Samajwadi Party is leading in both Phulpur and Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seats.

After all, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government at the centre has such a big majority that a couple of seats would not result in a big shift in fortunes for the government.

The bypolls were necessitated after Adityanath and his Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya vacated the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats respectively, following their election to the state legislative council.

Low voter turnout was recorded at both the constituencies.

In Phulpur, the poorest polling was reported from Allahabad (East) where only 21.65 percent voters turned up to exercise their franchise, followed by Allahabad (West) with 31 percent. Gorakhpur witnessed a polling percentage of 47.45 percent while Phulpur saw a turnout of only 37.39 percent at the close of the voting on Sunday. The Congress had nominated Sureetha Kareem for Gorakhpur and Manish Mishra for Phulpur. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) have extended support to the SP candidate. The candidates of the Grand Alliance of RJD, Congress and HAM were trailing in all three seats.
