Michael Carrick has announced he will retire from football at the end of the season

Jose Mourinho has made it clear that Carrick will be welcome to join his coaching set-up at Old Trafford and the player also added that something will be sorted out in due course.

"There comes a time when, as much as you don't like, your body tells you it's time to stop playing football", he said. Carrick made just one Premier League appearance this season and saw Nemanja Matic partner Ander Herrera and lately Scott Mctominay as his replacements in the United midfield.

"That's pretty much where I'm at, which is fine". "We're still talking about it to be honest so there is nothing to totally confirm yet, but it's looking likely". "But, yeah, it's looking likely", he stated. The England midfielder confirmed that he is totally fine now and wants to finish on his own terms.

On whether he still hopes to play a part in the run-in after recovering fully from a heart problem earlier in the season: "Obviously, I had the problem in the Burton game, when it started during the second half, and then had a few tests after that".

The Red Devils captain has confirmed plans to hang up his boots come the summer following a 12-year spell at Old Trafford, racking up 463 total club appearances in the process and scoring 24 goals.

The 36-year-old struggled to cement a starting berth in England's midfield, with former managers such as Sven-Goran Eriksson, Fabio Capello and Roy Hodgson instead favouring the likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

"I think it is quite refreshing to look at Scott and see how he deals with it", he said on the midfielder. For two or three days I was thinking am going to carry on playing is it worth it but that passed and I got fit. Hopefully I can get some game time and I am still enjoying training. At least I could decide and not be forced because of that, so I was determined to get back fit.
