David Shulkin Makes Late Play for Most Corrupt Trump Cabinet Member

Now Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been fired and CIA Director Mike Pompeo is moving to that position.

U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman was encouraged Tuesday at news reports that President Donald Trump is considering firing embattled Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin over his misuse of taxpayer money and reported infighting at the department.

Trump did not make a formal offer to Perry when the two men met on Monday, the report said.

White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins reports that the cabinet shakeup was discussed by Trump and Perry at lunch yesterday. At a time when Mr. Trump was struggling to find legislative victories, Dr. Shulkin and Congress's veterans committees delivered a string of popular, bipartisan bills to the president's desk.

In the midst of the controversies, Shulkin has complained that he is the victim of "subversion" from within the VA and at the White House organized by Trump administration political appointees who see him as an obstacle to expansion of the choice program allowing veterans to opt for private health care.

He took office in February 2017 following a unanimous vote by the Senate.

He came into office with a pledge to bring greater accountability to the agency and to improve veterans' access to care, and not to privatize the department.

Senior administration officials say Shulkin is increasingly on thin ice with the president after a bruising internal report found ethics violations in connection with the secretary's trip to Europe with his wife last summer.

The dispute spilled into public over the last month, following a scathing report by department's inspector general on a business trip that Dr. Shulkin took to Britain and Denmark a year ago.

Trump became irritated with Shulkin for publicly claiming that he has to fire people and purge his agency of Trump appointees, two people said.

The White House didn't comment on the rumors.
