Democrat Schumer to Trump on guns: Follow your instincts

US President Donald Trump is embracing broader changes to the weapons background check system

The White House backed away from Donald Trump's newfound support for gun control on Friday, only hours after the U.S. president met with the National Rifle Association's top lobbyist in the Oval Office. "POTUS & VPOTUS support the Second Amendment, support strong due process and don't want gun control".

President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday that he'd had a "good (Great) meeting in the Oval Office tonight with the NRA!".

"This is going to be an ongoing process", said Sanders during the White House press briefing. A spokeswoman for the NRAs lobbying arm, which Cox leads, did not respond to requests for further comment.

He also suggested some guns be taken away from people without due process.

President Donald Trump sat down with lawmakers this week in a televised strategy session to discuss the controversial gun issue.

On the flip side, the NRA has already issued statements condemning certain policy proposals the president has supported, like raising the age to buy a long gun.

"I think he thinks it would probably have more potential in the states than it would at the federal level", she added.

Toomey said Thursday his message to Trump was that "we will need the president's help to grow the vote in both the House and Senate".

Sanders reiterated Trump remains interested in overhauling the background check system used in some gun purchases, which he is "still very much interested in improving". He also tweeted, "Respect 2nd Amendment!" Yet Trump accused Pennsylvania Republican Senator Pat Toomey and others in his party on Wednesday of being too "afraid of the NRA" to add it to a bipartisan gun control bill they have put together.

IGN has reached out to Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, Activision, Ubisoft, and more for comment about a possible meeting with Trump as well.

Trump told House Republicans at the meeting Wednesday that no bill would pass with the concealed carry provision. "Every word of it was a betrayal", said one NRA member.

Others were more to the point.

In another exchange with Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.

Pelosi says 200 lawmakers signed onto legislation expanding background checks for gun buyers.

Without consensus on what a gun reform bill should look like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Senate will turn to other matters next week.

Cornyn's bill, which has bipartisan support, would offer incentives to federal and state agencies to file already required reports with the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, known as NICS, to block ineligible gun purchasers with felonies or risky mental illness. I think you will have tremendous support.

McConnell told reporters Thursday that while he'd like the Senate to consider the legislation from Republican John Cornyn of Texas and Democrat Chris Murphy of CT, he would instead be moving next week to a banking bill unrelated to the gun debate.

But even the Fix NICS Act is facing a hurdle: McConnell can not sidestep Senate rules to bring it to the floor quickly for a vote because unanimous consent is required to do so, and at least one senator, Mike Lee, R-Utah, has objected. John Cornyn and Chris Murphy though he could possibly go beyond that.

Congress passed similar legislation in 2007, after the massacre at Virginia Tech. It was drafted after the Air Force acknowledged that it failed to report the Texas gunman's domestic violence conviction to the National Criminal Information Center database. Creature of emotion and instinct that he is, he's been (fairly easily) convinced by the fake-news-liberal-media (read: the-folks-I-want-so-badly-to-like-me) that gun control's moment has arrived. Before the February 14 shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people, Republicans had no intention of reviving the polarizing and politically risky gun debate during an already hard election year that could endanger their congressional majority.

"We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from risky people". The NRA meeting was not on the president's public schedule.

That remark came after Toomey had walked Trump through the details of the bill that he and Democratic West Virginia Sen.

Trump: You went through a lot of presidents and you didn't get it done.
