Dolphins set to cut DT Ndamukong Suh

Expected to be released will Chargers pursue DT Ndamukong Suh

The Miami Dolphins will release defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh ahead of free agency and as early as Monday, according to a report from ESPN's Jeff Darlington.

Suh signed a six-year, $114.4 million contract with the Dolphins in 2015 after five stellar seasons with the Lions, including three All-Pro selections.

However, the Dolphins will also be forced to take on dead cap hits of $9.1 million and $13.1 million over the next two years. It's likely the Dolphins will designate him a post-June 1 cut, which will ultimately free up $17 million in cap space after that date.

Suh recorded 38 tackles and six sacks in 2015.

Suh certainly has had his moments in terms of attitude, but he's still a better-than-average player: his most recent Pro Bowl nod came in 2016, and analytics site Pro Football Focus had him ranked as the second-most disruptive defensive lineman in 2017.

Despite his age and relative ineffectiveness over the last few seasons, Suh should have plenty of offers once released.

The move to release Suh is not about performance, but merely a business decision. But after agreeing to acquire Robert Quinn and his $11.4 million cap hit via a trade with the Los Angeles Rams, the Dolphins' have an untenable chunk of their salary cap - almost $52 million (!) - along their defensive line.

Suh may have hinted the upcoming move in a Twitter video on Monday in which he said, "There will be some exciting things going on".

In three years with the Dolphins, Suh had 15.5 sacks.

The Dolphins are going to be unrecognizable.
