Drew Mahowald: The Vikings and their Chances of Landing Drew Brees

Saints tackle Zach Strief retires after 12 years in New Orleans

The New Orleans Saints failed to reach a contract extension with Brees before the legal tampering period opened Monday, which means any National Football League team can now make the veteran quarterback an offer.

And now we're getting reports of other teams reaching out to Brees.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero has reported that the Minnesota Vikings reached out to Tom Condon, Brees' agent.

As for Kirk Cousins, ProFootball Talk is reporting via a source that the Vikings and New York Jets are the only two teams who have shown interest in Cousins thus far. Brees previously said that he has no intentions of leaving New Orleans, but you can't blame the Vikings or any other team for trying.

Brees re-structured his contract to cut a cap hit in 2016 almost in half, pro-rating a signing bonus of $18 million over three years, starting in 2018. If winning a second Super Bowl and cashing in one last time before retirement are at the top of Brees' list of priorities, Minnesota should be his destination. It was highly expeected Brees was returning to New Orleans, but they have yet to sign an extension. Teams like the Minnesota Vikings are trying to figure out how to piece together their best rosters while players are looking to cash in on big paydays or position themselves to be Super Bowl contenders.

In 2017, Brees led the Saints to an 11-5 record, throwing for 4,334 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Brees could walk away from New Orleans and get paid more money and have just as good of a chance to win elsewhere.

Day 1 of the "legal tampering" period has not disappointed. While a certain percentage of the fan base will call him greedy and selfish and worse, others may be inclined to blame the team, if the gap between what the team offers and what another team offers is so obviously different that it would be hard to expect Brees to stay put.

What happens if the Vikes can't close the deal on either Cousins or Brees?
