Olympian Mikaela Shiffrin wins second straight World Cup overall title

After a tense build-up to the Olympics, the American won her second straight overall World Cup title on Friday, five races before the end of the season.

The American's only remaining challenger, Petra Vlhova, needs a win or second place to maintain a slim chance of overtaking Shiffrin in the slalom standings but the Slovak skier was 0.65 behind in sixth.

And having placed fourth on her first run, the 22-year-old put herself onto the podium with a total time of 2:35.54, earning her 60 points - enough to take her 603 clear of Switzerland's Wendy Holdener, who finished down in 14th. "The best thing for me now is to have the crystal globe already locked in".

Since 2014, Shiffrin has raced in more than world championship and world cup slalom competitions and she recently competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang.

The race was won by Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway.

Mikaela Shiffrin, world champion once again.

Attention will now turn to a slalom race tomorrow. Lindsey Vonn has won four.

In South Korea, she won Olympic gold in the giant slalom and silver in the combined event, but missed out on a medal in her strongest discipline, the slalom.

"It's an incredible moment right now", Shiffrin said. Rebensburg leads the overall giant slalom standings by 92 points over Tessa Worley of France.

"For sure I have a big lead", Shiffrin said.

Shiffrin sits second, on 657, and Rebensburg third on 607.
