Eddie Jones: 'Owen Farrell must get in the faces of France'

England go into the match following a comprehensive defeat in Scotland in their last match, and Jones said: "'We want a response from the players this week".

"The three of them are genuinely quick". The back three of Watson, Jonny May and Daly started against Australia in the autumn, when Brown had a head injury but, apart from a 2016 match against Fiji, Jones has never before left the Harlequins full-back out of his starting lineup when he has been available. Jones has talked this week of needing his new captain Owen Farrell to embody the absent Dylan Hartley's leadership and be abrasive, lead by example and inspire. Ireland have assumed control of the championship and can pile the pressure on the defending champions with a win over Scotland - they are [1.3] on the Betfair Exchange to do just that. France have lost four of the last five games against England so the recent clashes have certainly favoured the Six Nations champions although four of the last six clashes have been settled by no more than five points. We want to put a bit of heat on him'. It is the only change to the team which defeated Italy as Brunel has resisted the urge to recall the players dropped after going out in Edinburgh following the defeat to Scotland. It is a case of shuffling the pack, rather than throwing cards and caution into the wind and ripping up what has worked for 24 of 26 Tests thus far. But their opponents, France, can only dream of such a run of form.

Unlike their Six Nations rivals, France have never had an overseas coach in charge of their Test side and Jones said: "I'm sure every country would like to have their own nationality as coach because there is a lot of national pride involved, so I don't think they are missing out on anything".

But France fly-half Francois Trinh-Duc warned they are ready for the fight, saying: 'If we stop them playing, work hard at the breakdown, be aggressive in defence we can make it difficult for them'.

The noises from Les Bleus' camp are lacking in the usual confidence emanating from a French side. "But there is a bit of fear of not being at the level we need to be at to compete, which does create a bit of stress ahead of the match".

"I'm very happy and very satisfied". And no more so than Mathieu Bastareaud. This may not be a Test for those more au fait with the aesthetic beauty of the sport, despite both teams boasting artists of the sport.

Jones would not look beyond France when asked about future plans regarding Hartley and the captaincy. And then there is the fixture's legacy.

"There's a fierce rivalry".

Indeed, Jones lashed out a critics of Brown in a radio interview after his impressive performance against Wales but he was removed early against Scotland and Daly's return to fitness - he will make his first appearance since December - seems to have forced Jones's hand.

"You hear those old stories from club rugby when at the kick-off they deliberately kick into touch because they want to scrum you".

"It's not like that now but there are still areas of their game that decide how much energy they have got, so we have got to beat them in those areas - on the gainline and in the scrum".

Jones, however, was not about to declare March 8, 2018 as the day everything changed on the route to the 2019 World Cup.
