Aristocrat and designer Count Hubert James Marcel Taffin de Givenchy died on Saturday, aged 91.

In 1952, the New York Times magazine said of Givenchy "A Star Is Born" and fashion magazine l'Album du Figaro in its feature stated: "In one night, Hubert de Givenchy became one of fashion's most famous children with his first collection".

Known for designing the little black dress that Audrey Hepburn wears in the opening scene of 1961's Breakfast At Tiffany's, Givenchy was a trailblazer in the world of ready-to-wear fashion.

"Hubert de Givenchy was a symbol of Parisian elegance for more than half a century", his label said on Monday. "He revolutionised global fashion in creating the timeless looks for Audrey Hepburn, his friend and muse for more than 40 years".

"Not only was he one of the most influential fashion figures of our time, whose legacy still influences modern day dressing", wrote Givenchy artistic director Clare Waight Keller on his passing, "but he also was one of the chicest most charming men I have ever met".

It was Givenchy's 40-year friendship with Hepburn, whom he met on the set of the Billy Wilder Oscar-winning comedy "Sabrina" in 1953, that helped make him a fashion legend.

De Givenchy was born on February 21, 1927 to an an aristocratic family in the provincial city of Beauvais, AP reports, and founded his label in 1952.

The narrow-collared suits and slim woollen dresses Givenchy designed for the gamine actress for "Funny Face" and "How to Steal a Million" made both of them style icons. Unlike the decorative work at Dior, Givenchy's designs were innovative and chic, which set the fashion template for women in the 1950s and 1960s.

The announcement of his death came from the Givenchy fashion house, which is now owned by French luxury goods group LVMH.

In 1969, the designer launched a menswear line called Givenchy Gentleman.

In 1988, he sold his namesake brand to LVMH which owns Louis Vuitton but remained the lead designer until 1996.
