Met Éireann issued the orange alert for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath and Waterford between 3 am and noon on Sunday.

"We advise customers to plan their journey in advance and check our website www.dublinbus.ie for information on their route", they said.

Dublin Airport crews worked throughout the night to keep the runway clear but "temporarily suspending runway operations to clear recently fallen snow" for 40-minutes this morning due to safety reasons.

A spokesperson said:"Dublin Bus wishes to advise customers that due to the continuous snowfall during this morning, there are curtailments in place on some routes".

All Luas services are operating as of 11.30am, following earlier disruption between Saggart and Belgard due to technical fault with signals.

The Big Day Out event, which had been planned for Dublin's Merrion Square as part of St Patrick's Festival, has also been cancelled.

Bus Eireann have been forced to curtail some services due to the poor weather conditions.

Carlow Weather's Alan O'Reilly says the snow is likely to continue until this evening.
