Major League Baseball will stream games weekly on Facebook Live

This MLB season, Facebook will get exclusive rights to stream afternoon MLB games, starting with the first game on April 4th between Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The games will be available for free through Facebook's Watch tab in News Feeds. Games will also include in-game elements created for watching, sharing and interacting on Facebook, and the deal features on-demand highlight packages and recaps for each team. Facebook Watch is the site's video hub for original and live content.

"It is a major creative step forward in serving our diverse, passionate community of fans, who will enjoy a uniquely interactive experience watching our games on Facebook each week", said Tony Petitti, the league's deputy commissioner of business and media, in a statement. Major League Baseball said that every owner unanimously approved the deal. Fans may add this game and every weekly broadcast on Facebook Watch to their Watchlists by following the MLB Live show Page. Financial terms were not released. Tech companies are willing to spend tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars on this effort.

The two groups said Friday that the deal is an extension from a previous partnership a year ago in which Facebook streamed 20 baseball games. The company started livestreaming games back in May 2017, but this is the first time a USA major league has granted a social network sole rights to broadcast games. But it was beat out by Star India, owned by 21st Century Fox.

The 25-game deal marks MLB's first digital-only national broadcasts, with the first exclusive Facebook live stream - between Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets - to air on Wednesday April 4.

Although Facebook opted out of a bidding war for the NFL's Thursday Night Football games, its roster of sports streams has expanded greatly in recent years with soccer, college basketball and now professional baseball.

MLB Network will produce the games, "meaning they'll have a broadcast look and feel". At this point, we don't know how much the deal cost Facebook. "It doesn't stop here".
