A total of 24 members of the Afghan security services were killed as a result of two attacks staged by militants in the country's western province of Farah, local media reported on Saturday.

Naser Mehri, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said a large group of fighters had captured the centre of Anar Dara district on Sunday night after hours of fighting, though police and intelligence service forces were still holding out in their headquarters.

Bakhtawar added that the Taliban opened fire at the provincial police as well as administrative offices from many directions in order to take control over the headquarters.

In a message posted on Twitter, a Taliban spokesman said 53 commandos had been killed or wounded after arriving in Tapa Sadat, close to the Bala Buluk district center, and a sizeable quantity of weapons seized.

Afghanistan's Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah on Monday expressed his disappointment over the Taliban's lack of response to the Kabul peace offer.

The assault is the latest in a series of attacks in the province, which is situated on the border with Iran and is one of the poorest in Afghanistan. Some 40 militants were also killed, officials said.

Both the Taliban and rival militants from a branch of the so-called Islamic State regularly attack local officials and security forces in Nangarhar Province.
