Novak Djokovic makes 'weird' revelation after early defeat at Indian Wells Masters

ATP Indian Wells: Roger Federer tops Delbonis to keep perfect score in 2018

Former world number one Djokovic was playing his first match since the Australian Open due to an elbow problem that required surgery. I just completely lost rhythm, everything.

"I stopped doing it eventually but it was good for a spell".

A lot was expected of Djokovic, but the Serb was rusty and made 61 unforced errors in the match against Daniel that lasted two hours and 30 minutes.

Djokovic had four aces but overall he served poorly making four double faults and winning just 65 percent of his first-serve points.

Meanwhile, top seed Roger Federer wrapped up his rain-delayed match against Argentina's Federico Delbonis, winning 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

No wonder the injury hit Djokovic uttered to reporters afterward: "For me it felt like (the) first match I ever played on the tour".

"I was feeling like he was not loving my slice and I was also mixing in dropshots", said Federer who extended his ideal record this season to 14-0.

The match was tied 2-2 in the second set when it was halted Saturday.

The Serb was once the most dominant player around - winning four straight grand slam titles from 2015 to 2016 - but little of that scintillating form was on display when the 12-time grand slam victor was upset by Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-1 in the second round in Indian Wells on Sunday.

Federer is making his 17th appearance in the California desert and is assured of remaining world No1 if he makes it to the semifinals.

Federer won the Indian Wells championship for a fifth time a year ago, adding to his crowns in the Southern California desert in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2012.

Federer said he understands well how even a champion like Djokovic could be struggling to find his game so soon after having surgery. But at the same time, just didn't feel good at all. "When you go away from the game for over a two-month period, it starts feeling a little bit that way".

"I probably won't play in the very beginning, you know, meaning Monaco".

"But he's strong enough to deal with that, and I love him and I want to see him in the top positions very soon".

Nishikori withdrew from the Australian Open earlier this year with a right wrist injury.
