Packers make deal with defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson

Green Bay added to its free-agency splash Tuesday by reaching an agreement with Wilkerson, the once-promising defensive end the Jets released February 28. Wilkerson will join the defensive line with Mike Daniels, Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry and Montravius Adams.

In good news for Wilkerson, he can be reinvigorated by playing for a victor, something CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported was important to him when discussing Wilkerson on our Pick Six Podcast Free Agency Preview (listen and subscribe to all episodes here).

Now, the Green Bay Packers will hope to get the player that Wilkerson was earlier in his career after they agreed to terms with him, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Although there are some concerns regarding Wilkerson's willingness to give 100 percent game in and game out, the Packers could have a bargain on their hands if he lives up to his potential. The deal is expected to be for one season, giving Wilkerson the opportunity to test free agency again next year.

Of the 85 players with at least 300 pass-rush snaps in 2017, per NFL Research, Wilkerson ranked No. 69 with a pressure rate of just 5.4 percent.

This represents the third major piece of Packers news on Tuesday, following the release of WR Jordy Nelson and signing of free agent tight end Jimmy Graham. Pettine served in the same capacity for the Jets from 2009 to 2012 and coached Wilkerson during his first two years in the league.

One can assume new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine had a say in this signing.

The Jets released Wilkerson on March 5, ending a seven-year run in NY that turned bitter last season.

Wilkerson peaked in 2015, when he recorded a career-high 12 sacks and was named to his first Pro Bowl.
