US investigators probing a deadly helicopter crash in New York City's East River want to speak with the pilot who warned of engine failure before the chartered aircraft crashed into the icy water, killing all five passengers.

Brian McDaniel, a fire rescue officer who lived in Dallas, was in New York City visiting his friend Trevor Cadigan.

Eric Phillips, a spokesman for Mayor Bill de Blasio, said on Twitter that there was "at least one survivor, at least two fatalities". Two other passengers died weeks later as a result of their injuries. They were critical, but have since died. Previously, a Liberty aircraft collided with another helicopter shortly after takeoff at New York's West 30th Street Heliport on March 22, 2008.

It was not immediately clear what caused the helicopter to crash.
