Chung expressed thanks for China's role at a meeting earlier with China's top diplomat, State Councillor Yang Jiechi.

Chung flies to Beijing on Monday to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, while Suh heads to Tokyo to meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

China looks forward to smooth talks between the two Koreas and between the United States and North Korea and substantive progress in the denuclearization process and normalization of ties, Xi added.

While China supports maintaining sanctions for the time being, it is prepared to restore its trading relationship with the North in the event of a breakthrough in order to "create a favorable external environment for North Korea's sustainable economic development", Cheng wrote.
