"Disease X" is not exactly new, as this killer pathogen is a so-called "known unknown" that could be created by biological mutations, like what happened with Spanish Flu or HIV, The New York Post reports.

Each year the Geneva-based organisation, which is charged with monitoring and safeguarding world health, convenes a high-level meeting of senior scientists to list diseases that pose a serious risk of sparking a major global public health emergency.

Code-named "Disease X", this mystery pathogen hasn't even been discovered yet, but the looming threat of its nearly certain inevitability has secured it a place on the WHO's "most dangerous" list: a catalogue of potential future epidemics for which countermeasures are insufficient - or don't exist at all.

The disease joined a rundown that incorporates the Ebola virus, Respiratory Syndrome (SARS, ) Zika virus and Rift Valley fever (RVF), after a yearly survey by WHO.

WHO added that, "These diseases pose major public health risks, and further research and development is needed, including surveillance and diagnostics".

But for the first time the World Health Organization introduces a mysterious condition on the list, dubbed "Disease X". The mysterious nature of the disease is meant to ensure flexible planning of diagnostics tests and vaccine strategies, so that that they may be applied to a wide range of possible scenarios.

February 6-7, 2018 was the 3rd time the World Health Organization convened this committee of experts in viruses, bacteria and infectious disease to consider potential epidemics and pandemics.

"It's a natural process and it is vital that we are aware and prepare. It is probably the greatest risk", Mr. Rotingen adds.

More importantly, this list of diseases are ones to avoid. Even fatal, Disease X could be promoted by just an accident or a terror attack.

The organization at first discharged the rundown of organized diseases in December 2015. Primary care systems (local doctors and nurses) are key to safeguarding public health, as they're our best bet for detecting outbreaks of a new disease early on, and containing it before it spreads.

In particular, these experts recognized that existing drugs and vaccines need further improvement for several of the diseases considered but not included in the priority list.
