Venus Williams and Serena Williams talk as they play during a match

Venus and Serena have faced each other 28 times in their legendary careers and they are now meeting in Serena's first tournament back on the WTA Tour since she beat Venus 6-4, 6-4 in the 2017 Australian Open final.

Last week, Serena made her comeback in professional tennis with Indian Wells tournament that is being held in California, US.

And when Venus, accompanied by her father Richard, took her seat to watch her sister play Kim Clijsters in the final two days later, the atmosphere turned sour.

In other matches Saturday, defending champion Elena Vesnina eliminated American CiCi Bellis 2-6, 6-1, 6-1; No. 4 seed Elina Svitolina beat Mona Barthel 6-4, 6-3; No. 12 Julia Goerges defeated Natalia Vikhlyantseva 6-4, 6-1; No. 27 Carla Suarez Navarro beat Su-Wei Hsieh 6-4, 2-6, 6-3; and No. 26 Daria Gavrilova dismissed Yanina Wickmayer 7-6 (3), 6-2.

In 2004, Serena unveiled her own range of apparel under the label Aneres, her name spelled backwards, and it appears that she is now looking to expand the company with a range of cosmetics. "The false allegations that our matches were fixed hurt, cut and ripped into us deeply", Serena Williams wrote in a 2015 column published on the website Time.com announcing that would return to the tournament that year, ending a 14-year boycott.

Serena Williams said on Saturday she "literally didn't even think about" the canceled 2001 match.

"That's totally gone out of my mind", she said. First of all, 17 years ago seems like forever ago.

"This is the earliest the sisters will be playing in a tournament since the 1998 Australian Open, when they met in the second round".

She bested Zarina Diyas in straight sets in her opener, a round that Venus didn't even play in due to being seeded and getting a first-round bye. Most of their matches have come in finals or semifinals.

Over the years, the two sisters have played out some memorable encounters but this one is surely the most unique of the lot.

Venus is enjoying a resurgence on the Tour after a string of injuries limited her playing time for several seasons. "When she's missing, it's not by much".
