The announcement came on the heels of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Minister Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju sending his resignation from the Union Cabinet post.

Mumbai: Commerce and industries minister Suresh Prabhu was on Saturday given the additional charge of the civil aviation ministry, a day after the president accepted the resignation of Ashok Gajapathi Raju, the president of India's handle on micro blogging site Twitter said. TDP announced its decision to part ways from the BJP-led NDA after it openly expressed its dissatisfaction over the BJP-led Centre's denial of the long-pending demand for according "special status" to Andhra Pradesh. Soon after Raju resigned, the Civil Aviation portfolio was allotted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an interim arrangement. "Further, as advised by the Prime Minister, The President has directed that the work of the Ministry of Civil Aviation will be looked after by the Prime Minister". As Civil Aviation Minister, Prabhu's most pressing concern will be the disinvestment of national carrier Air India. "A big thanks to the entire team at the civil aviation ministry". After heading the Railways department for two years, Prabhu chose to relinquish the post in wake of a series of train derailment incidents. In the impact of the accidents, Prabhu had recommended that he had offered to resign as the Railways Minister and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to "wait". He was reassigned to the Commerce Ministry during last year's Cabinet reshuffle.
