It starred the late James Gandolfini as the fictional crime boss Tony Soprano, who suffered panic attacks and consulted a psychiatrist about how to balance his work as a unsafe gangster with being a good family man.

New Line has purchased the screenplay The Many Saints of Newark, the working title for a feature prequel of The Sopranos that is set in the era of the Newark riots in the 60s, Deadline reported.

Instead, Chase's movie will be set during the 1960s, which was a very tense time in Newark, New Jersey, due to rioting, racial tension and gang rivalries. Thanks to binge-watching and streaming, the show's fans have only grown in number since the series went off the air. It is believed that he will also help in the search to find the right person to direct the film. (The script was co-written by Lawrence Konner, the veteran TV/movie writer who also wrote a handful of "Sopranos" episodes).

Story details for the film have not been confirmed, but the chosen time period suggests audiences could see a younger version of Tony's father, Giovanni "Johnny Boy" Soprano, the former captain of the family's mob crew, and his mother, Livia, played unforgettably in the show's first season by Nancy Marchand.

But "The Sopranos" might still be coming to the big screen. Tony's uncle Junior is also rumored to be roped in for this film. "I could never see [a return of the show] except as a prequel", he told the magazine.

"I could conceive of maybe a prequel of 'The Sopranos'", he said.

Well, despite HBO denying that a prequel was in the works then, it seems that the good news is that it's happening now. The cast, director, or release date of the prequel of the Soprano has not yet been revealed.
