Gilpin's death was ruled a homicide after an autopsy showed she had a massive skull fracture, said the district attorney.

We have the latest news on the Tracy Gilpin case, with details on who Mark Hand is, and what alleged connections he may have to Gilpin and the MA area where Gilpin was murdered.

Authorities announced Sunday that Michael Hand of Troutman, North Carolina, was arrested there and will face charges in Gilpin's killing.

According to the published reports Troutman police said that over the past week, investigators from Massachusetts State Police, along with the Troutman and Mooresville Police Departments, conducted extensive interviews with Hand.

Tracey Gilpin was 15 when she left a party in the Rocky Nook section of Kingston to buy cigarettes on October 1, 1986.

Tracy Gilpin's sister, Kerry Gilpin, who is now a Massachusetts State Police Colonel, released a statement on behalf of her family. The much-welcomed news of an arrest in the case leaves us cautiously optimistic that justice for Tracy is within reach.

Authorities said they have started rendition proceedings to bring him back to MA. My thoughts today are not just with my own family, but also with all the families who have lost loved ones to violence. Three weeks later, her body was found in a park in neighboring Plymouth.

'We will continue to work tirelessly to find justice for all murder victims'.

Hand previously lived in Kingston.

Tracy last was seen purchasing cigarettes at a convenience store.

Around 10:30 p.m., Tracy left the party with two friends.

Tracy refused and started walking, the station reported.

Colonel Gilpin thanked Cruz, State Police detectives assigned to the DA's office, the State Police Crime lab, police in Kingston, Plymouth, North Carolina, and "all of the investigators who have worked diligently over the last 31 years to solve Tracy's murder".

Tracy's story received a renewed attention in 2017 when her family offered a $25,000 reward for any new information that could help police track down the teen's killer.
