BREAKING: US Secretary of State Aborts Nigeria Trip, Returns to Washington

He is due to fly on to Nigeria after Chad, but will spend just a few hours there on Monday evening rather than the overnight visit originally planned.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson speaks about the US relationship with Africa and his upcoming trip to the continent at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, on March 6, 2018.

"Due to demands in the Secretary's schedule, he is returning to the US one day early after concluding official meetings in Chad and Nigeria", Under Secretary of State Steve Goldstein told reporters.

He had initially been scheduled to stay there overnight, hold further meetings on Tuesday with United States embassy staff and then fly back to Washington.

Tillerson had been scheduled to lay a wreath at the site of the 1998 bombing of the USA embassy in Nairobi, in which more than 200 people were killed, and attend an event to highlight US health assistance in Africa.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says a "dramatic" and surprising change of posture by Kim Jong Un led President Donald Trump to agree to a meeting with the North Korean leader.

He will next visit Nigeria before flying home later Monday.

"The secretary is expected to hold a press conference at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday by 11.45 a.m "Tillerson is expected to be joined in the press conference by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama", the embassy stated".
