March Madness 2018: Virginia loses ACC Sixth Man of the Year De'Andre Hunter for season

No. 1 overall seed Virginia announced Tuesday afternoon that freshman power forward De'Andre Hunter will miss the NCAA Tournament because of a broken left wrist. He averaged 9.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 33 games, reached double figures 16 times and led the Cavaliers in scoring on six occasions.

The top four teams in the AP poll matched the selection committee's No. 1 seeds.

A fast-rising National Basketball Association prospect, Hunter was also starting to flash an efficient three-point stroke, too.

Kyle Guy. Guy was the leading scorer on the ACC's best team.

Trae Young of the Oklahoma Sooners, by comparison, is worth 5.6 points more than an average player. Those are two of the best players in the nation, but perhaps a better comparison for Hunter would be Donte DiVincenzo, sixth man for top-seed Villanova.

This will be the first matchup between the teams in more than 12 years as they last met in December 2005, a Virginia win. In ACC play, Hunter took his game to a new level - 10.8 points, 58.2 percent true shooting and a player efficiency rating of 25.5.

Hunter's absence will, however, necessitate some tweaks by Bennett in terms of how possessions are allotted on offense. Hunter logged 18 minutes off the bench and scored 10 points against that game. That ranks 22nd in the ACC amongst players with at least 60 possessions. He was a key element for the Cavaliers, a strong defender and quality 3-point shooter at 38.2 percent. No, but it isn't a disaster, either, so feel free to keep your confidence in the Cavaliers' title hopes.
