CNN's Kaitlin Collins: White House Officials Watched Betsy DeVos' Disastrous Interviews 'In Horror'

That all changed last night as she went on CBS's "60 Minutes".

STAHL: Why take away money from that school that's not working - to bring them up to a level where they are, that school is working? "We should be funding and investing in students, not in school buildings, not in institutions, not in systems". When pressed by Stahl about institutional racism and for more specifics on why she thinks the rule needs to be rolled back, DeVos twice repeated the "opportunity to learn" line. What about those kids?

DeVos tried to dodge Stahl's question, saying, "Well, there [are] lots of great options and choices for students here in MI". In response, DeVos said that she gives "a lot of credit to the students there for really raising their voices".

"Have the public schools in MI gotten better?" asked correspondent Lesley Stahl.

"Maybe I should, yes", DeVos responded.

"I don't know overall".

Among other measures, the Trump administration is urging states to pass temporary "risk protection orders", as Florida recently did, with technical assistance coming from Washington, said Andrew Bremberg, a presidential assistant who heads the Domestic Policy Council.

Stahl again pushed back, noting that "your argument that if you take funds away, the schools will get better, is not working in MI, where you have a huge impact and influence over the direction of the school system here".

"Maybe I should", DeVos then said when Stahl suggested she visit those schools.

STAHL: The public schools here are doing worse than they did. DeVos: Michigan schools need to do better. There is no doubt about it.

The Education Secretary, who also faced questioned about why she is the "most hated" member of the Cabinet, found herself surrounded by controversy this week after a visit to survivors at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. "Have you tried to figure out what they're doing?"

A senior official said that there are already "a multitude of programs that exist across the country where school personnel are trained in conjunction with state or local law enforcement", noting that the administration is "working with the Department of Justice to continue and increase the amount of help" for such initiatives.

DEVOS: Maybe I should. Yes.

DEVOS: I'm not so sure exactly how that happened.

DEVOS: Sometimes it does.

STAHL: Do you ever say.

DeVos also talked about the death threats and protestors who meet her to ask her about her policies.

STAHL: Yeah, but are they the same?
