The ruling judge, Justice Mark Warby, ruled in the petitioner's favor on Friday, and ordered Google to remove the relevant search results.

He spent six months in jail but his crime will now be omitted from Google's search engine.

Both businessmen, who were convicted of criminal offences many years ago, argued that their convictions were now legally "spent", and that they have been rehabilitated. He claimed that the information was no longer relevant and that it should be deleted.

A businessman with an historic criminal conviction has won his case against Google in a "right to be forgotten" lawsuit seeking to remove information about his conviction from search results.

NT1 was convicted more than 10 years ago of conspiring to account falsely, and was jailed for four years.

The European Court of Justice issued a landmark ruling in 2014 that search engines like Google must remove certain unwanted links upon request, establishing a legal precedent across the European Union.

Google was told by a London judge to remove links to older stories about a businessman's criminal conviction from search results, in a United Kingdom case that could dramatically expand Europe's "Right to Be Forgotten" law.

The judge said he'd also taken the nature of the man's conviction into consideration, as well as his demonstrated "remorse" for the crime.

Mr Justice Warby told the High Court: "He has not accepted his guilt, has misled the public and this court, and shows no remorse over any of these matters".

However, the judge ruled out any damages payment.

He added: "The right to be forgotten litigation requires the courts to once again consider where that balance lies, a question which has implications for us all". We are pleased that the court recognised our efforts in this area, and we will respect the judgments they have made in this case.

'His past offending is of little if any relevance to anybody's assessment of his suitability to engage in relevant business activity now, or in the future.

Reactions to the rulings were mixed on social media.

The Right to Be Forgotten can be interpreted in various ways by courts throughout Europe.

As a result, the stories were "of no sufficient legitimate interest to users of Google Search to justify its continued availability" and should be removed, according to the judge.

The man, named only as NT2 in court, wanted a past crime he committed to not come up in search results. In those circumstances, "the public interest in having information with his name about this case doesn't prevail".

"There is an inherent tension between an individual's right to privacy and what information the public interest requires be available", said solicitor Ben Rose, who is based at law firm Hickman & Rose.
