Macron's office said he spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin expressing concern about the deterioration of the situation in Syria and calling for more dialogue with Moscow.

The United States, France and Britain launched military strikes in Syria to punish President Bashar Assad for an apparent chemical attack against civilians and to deter him from doing it again, President Donald Trump said.

The chairman of the worldwide affairs committee of Russia's upper house of parliament, Konstantin Kosachev, said the strikes were a violation of worldwide law and probably created to prevent investigators from the global chemical weapons watchdog from doing their work.

Trump, while addressing the nation on Friday night, said the joint strike with France and the United Kingdom was now underway.

Lawmakers from around the Inland Northwest are responding to President Donald Trump's order of precision missile strikes against the regime of Syrian Dictator Bashar Assad in a coordinated attack with United Kingdom and French Allies. "It's to establish a strong deterrent against the production spread and use of chemical weapons".

The strikes targeted three areas: a scientific research center near Damascus, a chemical weapons storage facility west of Homs and a storage facility and command post near Homs.

No information has yet emerged regarding the number of casualties.

AFP's correspondent in Damascus said several consecutive blasts were heard at 04:00local time (01:00 GMT), followed by the sound of airplanes overhead.

Trump ordered the launch of air strikes on Syria in retaliation to the alleged chemical attacks by President Bashar al-Assad.

On Friday, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told a press briefing that the United States and Western countries continue their "indiscriminate and unfounded accusations" against the legitimate Syrian government over the alleged use of chemical weapons against civilians in the Syrian city of Douma on April 7.

Before daybreak on Saturday, the US, along with its allies Britain and France, launched airstrikes against Syrian military positions in the capital Damascus and central province of Homs.

Quoting military sources, Syrian TV reported the air defense shot down about 15 missiles, while missiles fired at Homs were intercepted or deviated from the targets and wounded three.

"We have seen as a pattern in the world today is actors who behave in a reprehensible manner, then can be quite clever in trying to muddy the waters and in trying to dodge responsibility", she added.

The ministry said it was an "attempt to block the exposure of their lies and fabrications". Russia's US embassy released a statement warning that the airstrikes will "not be left without consequences".

"Kremlin's support of Damascus's crimes can not be left without attention, as the Kremlin's regime with its actions, including in the UN Security Council, consistently makes it impossible to solve the conflict in Syria in accordance with the UN Charter", the statement says. "The US - the possessor of the biggest arsenal of chemical weapons - has no moral right to blame other countries".

What have we learned about the Douma attack?

The Syria attack drew support from the European Union, Germany, Israel and other allies while British Prime Minister Theresa May said reports indicate the Syrian government used a barrel bomb to deliver the chemicals used in an attack on Douma.
